About Us

Us

Handy Stop Nursery, owned by Zack Bordovsky, is a retail garden center located in Yoakum Texas. The county line between Dewitt and Lavaca counties runs through the nursery just back of our 16,000 square foot greenhouse.

Handy Stop has a very humble beginning when a Nebraska man (Leonard Zila) and an Iowa woman (Shirley Houk) married, moved to Texas, built a convenience store and then decided that maybe the locals would buy vegetable plants as well. Leonard and Shirley, both from the farmlands of America and also having lived through the Great Depression, didn’t know much about the nursery business but they did know two important things: QUALITY & VALUE!!! Later, they wouldn’t know how their daughter, Shirley, and son-in-law Alan (two CPA’s from “the city”) would handle the nursery business. But the business has been thriving for years and Alan and Shirley happily keep it running.

That all happened over 40 years ago, and the importance of QUALITY & VALUE has always been priority. Oh, the couple of flats of vegetables on the sidewalk offered only seasonally, now has become ten’s of thousands of plants and trees sold annually.

We wish to thank all the gardeners in Dewitt, Gonzales, Jackson, Lavaca and Victoria counties that have made Handy Stop a destination nursery. We invite you to stop by or give us a call and let us help you with your lawn and garden needs.
